ABSTRACT
In a small group the tutor is responsible for making the mode of study appropriate and applicable to all the students in the class. Our global and accessible universities offer the opportunity for a greater mix of people than ever before. People from different countries and educational cultures join the SGT session with widely varying expectations of how to work in a tutorial or problems class. Some students may join the class expecting the tutor to ‘lecture’ and may find it very difficult to ‘challenge’ or ‘question’ what the tutor says because they have no previous experience of formalized collaborative learning.
