ABSTRACT

I wish to preface this chapter with a personal confession – I continue to be amazed at the poor standards of grammar and spelling which I repeatedly observe in handwritten work from . . . colleagues! I am also surprised to find that my own grasp of grammar and spelling loosens when I am writing on a whiteboard or flipchart in front of a group of learners. However, I observe an utterly professional and correct standard of written work in published and prepared documentation from the same writers. Clearly anxiety and context affect us all. No surprises then that our students struggle to provide written work of the standard we ideally wish for and identified in the Dearing Report (1997) as one of the chief communication skills which was vital for our students to develop in the future.
