ABSTRACT

This book is designed to help you focus your attention where you need it most right now. We also hope you will look up chapters from time to time to improve your practice as you develop. The book is divided into two parts. Part 1, You and Assessment, focuses on your role and the skills and understanding required of assessors. Chapter 1 helps you identify your current role and to define your approach and attitude to assessment. Chapter 2 concentrates on how to assess formatively and give effective feedback to students on what they write. Chapter 3 considers the terminology and tricks of the trade of assessment. Chapter 4 examines the role of time management, planning and record-keeping in assessment practices. Part 1 closes with an examination of the generic language issues which affect all assessment of students’ written work.
