ABSTRACT

Throughout this book we examine various aspects of a liberal conception of education which is concerned with preparing individuals to lead their own lives. Conservative liberal education in the past emphasised the importance of acquaintance with the dominant culture of the society and with the acquisition of character traits such as self-control and independence in order to do so. We present a modern version of this in our treatment of culture and the curriculum. However, whereas the traditional form of conservative liberal education was designed for those destined for particular positions in society and also maintained many of the features of the way of life of the gentry, our version is designed for all those being educated.
