ABSTRACT

In October 1922 the Conservative Party, despite the opposition of Austen Chamberlain, its new Leader, decided to withdraw its support for Lloyd George, over a range of policy issues and scandals. Lloyd George resigned and Bonar Law, at once re-instated as the Leader of the Unionist Party, agreed on 23 October 1922 to allow his name to be put forward for Prime Minister. His premiership lasted little more than six months and his government failed to tackle the four main issues of the day: American loans; German reparations; high unemployment; and a shortage of housing. He resigned on 19 May 1923, suffering from cancer of the throat, and died on 30 October 1923.
