ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide an overview of issues surrounding special educational needs. As we shall see, special educational needs is a catch-all phrase that encompasses an incredibly vast range of difficulties and disabilities. On a general level schools will follow the Code of Practice. The Code of Practice is a government document, which offers guidance relating to how students with special educational needs should be assessed. The assessment follows a staged model, with each stage signifying differing levels of monitoring and intervention. Some children with special educational needs will be issued with a statement while others will have an IEP, an individual educational plan. While an overview of a number of different types of special needs is given, the causes, effects, intervention strategies and evaluations of these strategies will be considered in relation to the condition of dyslexia. In addition this chapter will focus on the issue of gifted children.
