ABSTRACT
Ten years later Persian King Xerxes set out to avenge his father’s loss at Marathon and punish the Greeks for their resistance. Persia was then the largest empire in the world, with armies many times larger than any combination of Greek city-states could field. Xerxes sent an army of overwhelming numerical superiority into Greece hoping to end the conflicts once and for all and extend Persian influence into southeastern Europe.
