ABSTRACT

British general James Wolfe, a middle-class professional officer, led an army against the city of Québec, the key to French Canada. Wolfe had recently commanded successful expeditions against French garrisons in Nova Scotia, Acadia, and Louisbourg, the island fortress that guarded the entry to the St Lawrence Seaway. He knew that the powerful English navy could deny the French garrison resupply by sea. Wolfe still had to overcome a powerful French fort, the Citadelle, that protected the city and defeat an experienced French commander, the Marquis de Montcalm.
