ABSTRACT

In our analysis of young people’s decision-making so far we have considered the processes of choice in relation to significant transition points within education and training pathways – entry to primary school and secondary school, and choices about entering further and higher education. At each stage the impact of earlier choices constrains, in some way, the options that are available, and so, ultimately, shapes the choices that a young person can make as s/he moves from education or training into the labour market as the first formal step in their economic working life or career. The ways in which young people make active or passive choices that lead to career entry are the central theme of this chapter.
