ABSTRACT
In these sections Wittgenstein explains and examines a simple philosophical conception of language. He expresses his thoughts succinctly, and it is important to remember he does not wish to spare us ‘the trouble of thinking’ (p. x). Elsewhere he says: ‘Sometimes a sentence can be understood only if it is read at the right tempo. My sentences are all supposed to be read slowly’.1
