ABSTRACT
The archaeological and historical record over several millenia shows that the basic construction materials used to create human shelter were the same in all parts of the world and derived from the earth or from plant life, used as locally available and depending on climatic conditions. Figure 1.1 shows an example of a Stone Age house at Skara Brae in the Orkney Islands (c.2500 bc).
