ABSTRACT

In Greek mythology-in one version of the story-the gods give Pandora a sealed jar containing all the evils of the world, plus one good, Hope, which is compressed at the bottom. Curious about what the jar contains, Pandora opens it, causing all the sorrows, diseases, quarrels and woes that have ever since afflicted human beings to fly out. Realizing what she has done, Pandora hastily snaps back the lid of the jar, but she is too late to prevent the plague of evils from escaping into the world. Only Hope, which is slower than the rest, remains trapped inside.
