ABSTRACT
Cuba was ‘discovered’ by Christopher Columbus in 1492. A plantation economy developed based on slavery (which was not abolished until 1886) and sugar. Cuba was a Spanish colony for about four centuries. An independent republic was declared in 1902 (the USA had intervened in the final war of independence against Spain), but Cuba was heavily dependent on and subject to direct and indirect USA influence until 1959.
