ABSTRACT

Assessment, recording and reporting are key issues that relate to all areas of teaching, learning and development within higher education. Assessment has several forms and is needed for a variety of purposes within teaching and learning. It provides information on individual student progress, helps academic tutors to address areas of weakness, and gives both tutor and student information about their academic progress. Assessing students’ work is not a new venture, but within the past five years greater emphasis has been placed on alternative ways of assessing students in higher education, both formally through standardised university examinations and informally through tutor assessment.
