ABSTRACT

The use of the target language (TL) for `instruction and interaction is a key methodological question for modern foreign languages (mfl) teachers. Rather than discussing the issues associated with TL use as a recurring theme in various places in the book, we cover them in one single chapter in order to provide a coherent overview of relevant issues. Therefore, the examples given need to be seen in the context of the respective chapters they are linked to, for instance examples of how to teach grammar in the TL need to be related to the overall approach to teaching and learning grammar outlined in detail in Chapter 7.
