ABSTRACT

Personal judgement and choice: I have claimed these lie at the core of moral agency, for they are underpinned by reasonableness and autonomy. Nevertheless, it is quite possible to make reasoned, free choices that are immoral. Consequently, Part II will sketch out and defend an account of what it is to be, and (more importantly) to become, a moral person. To construct and defend an entire ethical theory is far beyond the scope of this book, as is a thorough survey of the moral systems hitherto proposed. Hence, I shall present and defend a multi-dimensional account of moral development which draws on elements from two influential theories: virtue ethics and discourse ethics.
