ABSTRACT

The routes to the north of Palmyra are not as well attested as those through Palmyra, Petra and Egypt. Nonetheless, there is some evidence to show that merchants made use of the routes which departed Antioch and crossed the Euphrates at Zeugma. Among these was the famous ‘Silk Road’, as well as the route along the Euphrates described by Isidore which gave access to Mesopotamia and the Gulf.
