ABSTRACT
Elections contribute to the legitimacy of a government and the political system, so long as they are perceived to be conducted freely and honestly. Elections allow the citizenry to participate in the selection of their leaders, and in the process they further the political education of citizens and enhance acceptance of the institutions and principles guiding the state. They also reinforce the notion of government accountability and provide feedback for those in charge. 1
