ABSTRACT
Ruskin’s dictum that ‘the eye of knowledge is as a telescope to the common eye whereby more is apprehended than is immediately seen’ did not apply to Davis’ journeys to and from Cordoba nor to his world tour, at least in a landform sense. He developed the cycle theme in New England when struggling for promotion and academic recognition at Harvard. Once established he carried it as a telescope to all parts of the world.
