ABSTRACT

On his resignation at the close of the year 1912, Davis had several publications in the pipeline. The two of these that especially concern us are Sana’s confirmation of Darwin’s theory of coral reefs’ which in 1913 appeared in different-length articles in three journals (1913J, N and O); and ‘Meandering valleys and underfit rivers’ (1913Q), one of Davis’ early topics. The first-named revealed his new interest in coral reefs and foreshadowed an important line of research which he intended to pursue during his retirement, as discussed in Chapter 25. The second article, which was treated in Chapter 16, represents the last of a series on fluvial processes with which, as we have seen, Davis had been occupied for many years. Thus Davis’ retirement was marked by an academic hiatus, this was to be accentuated by events in his personal life.
