ABSTRACT

In July 1923 when Davis had refound marital contentment and much of his former buoyancy, his second wife died. On this occasion grief was not so prolonged. Molly Davis’ death came at an age when it was less unexpected, and they had been married less than nine years. Yet Davis felt the loss deeply. Temporarily the rhythm of his life was broken and throughout the following years he struggled to regain some of the old productive pattern. He became sad and restless, and wandered from place to place trying to recapture his sense of fulfilment. Once more he first sought consolation in travel abroad and within three months was in the West Indies.
