ABSTRACT
After leaving Hong Kong by steamer at the end of January 1878, Davis and his cousin had little time ashore until they landed at Calcutta. They managed part of a day at Singapore and a short trip inland at Penang. They were luckier in Ceylon, where they spent four days at Galle and made several journeys inland and to Colombo. The stop at Madras was restricted to a walk round the town.
