ABSTRACT

A number of alternatives exist for the firm with a piece of technology to exploit, or the firm seeking to introduce new technology from outside. One form, that of licensing, is treated as a separate chapter. But a straight licence is not always a viable option for a potential licensor or licensee any more than pure self production. And other means do exist which involve a closer relationship and co-operation than licensing. The remainder are all to be considered together in this chapter. The questions are all the same for each option. What is it? What are its main advantages and disadvantages? And what factors must be taken into account in choosing between them when there is a choice? Factors affecting the choice of business medium will include the secrecy and life expectancy of the project, the element of financial risk involved and tax considerations.
