ABSTRACT
A number of new developments in technology and in pure science with potential technological significance have stretched most existing systems of intellectual property rights to their limits by transcending many of the traditional scientific concepts and the boundaries between technical fields. Among the most significant are those in biotechnology and computer technology. Other, older fields of knowledge also cause continued problems, not least because of disagreement over how they should be treated. Pharmaceuticals and medical treatments provide very important instances of this.
