ABSTRACT

Scientists and technologists who do not have, or want, to write a book, still have to communicate. You may have to produce an instruction manual, prepare an expository paper or a research or planning report for general release or for internal company use; these are usually haveto-do tasks. Writing popular and informative papers, or describing new developments in trade or professional journals aimed at broad groups such as engineers, computer scientists, the pharmaceutical industry or management are other common jobs. You may have to write reports for in-house circulation, for publication in company bulletins, or for trade or industrial group magazines (this is sometimes have-to-do, sometimes want-to-do writing). Experts may be asked to write advertising copy for those who need, or want, technical details. Reviewing books in one’s field of expertise is another task-one not always as well done as it deserves to be. This chapter covers such activities.
