ABSTRACT

The Public Inquiry had dragged on longer than any of us anticipated, being spread over six months, and the costs of some £20 000 incurred had far exceeded the money raised by the Action Group. The financial realities soon brought us all down to earth, despite a slightly euphoric feeling that we had put forward a compelling and justifiable alternative which befitted Winchester. At that time the Joint Action Group debts of £7000 seemed a great burden and it was with some desperation that Action Group members organized fund-raising suppers and events in the best parish tradition. Slowly the funds came in, gradually diminishing the amounts owed on the final accounts (thankfully always on the low side) to the professional advisers we had commissioned.
