ABSTRACT

Bucks (billy goats), stubborn and full of fight, also inspired Indo-European warriors. Buck-warriors, often wearing horned helmets, are found among Vedic Indians, Iranians, Sardinians, Mycenaeans, archaic Greeks, and Celts. Early Rome knew them too: buckwarriors of Juno Sospita had their part in the Lupercalia festival as had wolf-warriors of Romulus and Mars.1
