ABSTRACT

The construction industry relies on the transfer of information. The employer develops a brief or outline requirements and tries to convey these to the consultants. The consultants need to transfer the information contained within the brief into a design and specifications. The employer in turn needs to understand and approve the proposals before it is passed on to the contractor to construct. During this process information is passed backwards and forwards verbally, by letter or fax or by means of diagrams, illustrations, models or computer graphics. If the information is not properly recorded, noted and understood before it is conveyed it could prove disastrous. Perhaps the process can be likened to the children’s party game of Chinese whispers where a message is whispered from person to person and usually the final message bears little resemblance to the original.
