ABSTRACT
The Internet has developed out of a U.S. Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) project to investigate exchanging files between remote computers via long-distance leased telephone lines. This network became known as the ARPAnet and, in late 1969, the first four sites-University of California at Los Angeles, Stanford Research Institute, University of California at Santa Barbara and the University of Utah-were successfully exchanging data with each other.
