ABSTRACT
Subsurface occurrences of gases and vapours pose far more immediate hazards than do concentrations of solid contaminants in soils. Solid contaminants ultimately might cause chronic health risks to people or (if the substances are soluble) harm to water resources and the local environment, but they do not present acute and rapidly acting risks.
