ABSTRACT

Every year since the New Urban News began publishing, the number of new urbanist projects in the United States has increased. By 2004, projects were up by 37 per cent over the year previous (Steuteville 2004a:1). Steuteville reported 648 neighbourhood-scale communities in the works, with 369 actually built or under construction. A neighbourhood scale project includes at least six hectares with a central gathering place and the potential walk to shops or businesses when complete. The largest new urbanist projects, like Celebration in Florida, expect to house about 10,000 people.
