ABSTRACT
It seems fair to say that Canadian planners have embraced new urbanism. In talks at conferences, Andres Duany suggested that Canadian planning led the way in implementing new urbanism (Wight 1995). In Toronto, Duany criticized Seaside as a failure, but called the Cornell project in Markham ‘absolutely flawless’ (Warson 1996:21), his ‘flagship project’ (Bentley Mays 1997:C17). What created the context in which the message of new urbanism would find such a receptive audience in Canada?
