ABSTRACT
Diplomacy gradually became more ‘respectable’ in the twentieth century, but still retained connections with intelligence. Since this paper was published the succession of spy cases and related diplomatic expulsions has continued. Diplomacy and intelligence are both competitors and collaborators.
