ABSTRACT

The impact of road-based transport is manifold, ranging from global warming to fragmentation of communities. The most urgent issue is currently global warming. Most vehicles run on fossil fuels, the burning of which is associated with global warming. Transport is responsible for approximately 26 per cent of CO2 emissions in the UK (Howard 1995). In the US, road transportation accounts for half the oil consumption and one-third of CO2 emissions (Hoffman 2001).
