ABSTRACT

This chapter is about surrogacy, or surrogate motherhood. As the opening quotations suggest, this practice, especially the commercial variety, is something that many regard as extremely morally objectionable. Commercial surrogacy has been attacked on an array of different grounds, but almost all of the objections concern themselves primarily with one or more of the following: harm to surrogates or children; the commodification of surrogates, children, or (more generally) reproduction; or the exploitation of women, especially those who are poor or vulnerable in some other way.
