ABSTRACT
For the second century we have outstandingly rich sources. A wealth of inscriptions, triumphal reliefs, gravestones, and altars, bring the horse guard to life. To be sure, archaeological finds furnish facts rather than insights, and images rather than events, yet several literary sources fill in the picture.
