ABSTRACT

T elevision Studies is a relatively new academic subject compared tothe study of other media such as literature or art, for example, andeven in its short history the emphases in the subject and the ways of teaching it have changed. Television Studies is in a continual process of development, and the ongoing production of new television programmes, made by new and changing institutions under changing conditions and with new technologies, continually generates new questions and ways of answering them. In this book we aim to take account of recent and current developments in television and in the ways it can be studied, building on the work done by Patricia Holland who was the author of two earlier editions of The Television Handbook.
