ABSTRACT

The problem that almost all teachers face, except those working in a one-to-one situation, is how to interact with and teach large numbers of children at the same time. In our everyday life, we do not have to speak with twenty-fi ve to thirty people at the same time. If we did have to do so, we would think it very odd. School classrooms are then very unusual places. If we think school classrooms are ordinary, it is only because we have all experienced them. Let us give you an example of how different they would look if we had not had any prior experience. Craig Raine’s poem ‘A Martian Writes a Postcard Home’ makes our world strange.
