ABSTRACT

In this book, we have shown you a number of examples of teaching. We have also commented on them and tried to point out where we think that teachers are having a particular impact on the quality of children’s learning. The teachers we have used as our sample are highly skilled and held in great respect. We can all learn from such colleagues, even if we don’t quite meet their very high standards. It is important to learn how to become more effective by using the example of such skilled and experienced teachers. This does not mean simply copying what they do. It is essential to have a mode of analysis that enables you to identify the features that make up an effective pedagogy. In the book Women Teaching Boys (Ashley and Lee 2003), the authors report that what boys, and indeed all pupils, want is good and effective teaching.
