ABSTRACT
The physical and sporting education of Italian girls and young women had to be adapted to the pedagogic goals pursued by the Fascist regime, and therefore to the models of femininity that promoted. Like the regime’s institutions for sports medicine, hygiene and therapeutics, schools also promoted eugenics for the sake of the Italian ‘race’, slowing down the development of women’s sport in a nation that had long defined itself as ‘athletic’.
