ABSTRACT

The geography of horseracing is largely about the location of racecourses. To some extent it is also concerned with the sites of training yards across Britain but these tend to congregate near courses. The major training centres are situated in areas where there are significant opportunities for horses to work out and race: Middleham, with its adjacent moor, and Malton in Yorkshire, and Lambourn on the Berkshire Downs, all with numerous racetracks nearby, and Newmarket, the centre of thoroughbred racing and the wide expanses of Newmarket Heath.
