ABSTRACT

Panpsychism can be articulated in many ways, but one approach represents a kind of minimal transition away from physicalism. Deferential Monadic Panpsychism (DMP) basically accepts the scientific picture of the world but adds some element of consciousness as a new fundamental feature of reality. Complex entities consciousnesses are formed from the simple in ways analogous to the way complex physical systems arise. This form of panpsychism has advantages but faces powerful objections. A panpsychism based on combinatorial infusion has been presented. The notion of combinatorial infusion does not seem to be incoherent. If there is such an operation in the realm of consciousness then panpsychism can be defended against the combination problem. The nature of the aggregation of consciousness may be very complex. DMP also faces the objection that even if some robust form of aggregation is assumed, there will be no distinctive role for the aggregate.
