ABSTRACT

One category of the most neglected people in the aftermath of a traumatic incident is often the team that went in to work with all the survivors. Team members sometimes fail to recognize the full impact the event has on their own lives. Caregivers spend most of their focus on the people who are directly involved in and impacted by the incident and fail to pay attention to their own needs. A counselor who tries to do everything ends up not doing anything worthwhile in the short run and becomes a burden to others. Those who choose to work in crises must quickly build a sense of support through interpersonal relationships with other professionals. When a trauma response team has finished its work with the people involved in a critical incident, team members are normally tired and ready to return to their own lives.
