ABSTRACT

Making the most of available curriculum time can be thought of as the long-term allocation of time to individual subjects, and the pace individual lessons are organised. When devising a time allocation for subjects over the year the process can be simplified by acknowledging at the outset that the timing will not be precise for every week due to unforeseen circumstances and a changing pattern of curriculum delivery over the year. Encourage staff to produce general time guidelines which can be used for calculating weekly time allocations for each subject. This exercise needs to be continually under review as new initiatives are introduced, such as the Literacy Hour. Time guides create a system which is useful for teachers when designing the balance of the curriculum.
