ABSTRACT

Hearing voices is an ancient and widespread human experience. From time immemorial shamans and mediums have heard the voices of spirits and relayed their messages to audiences. Voices thus became a source of culture. The gods spoke to humankind, giving guidance (Watkins, 1998: 35). Jaynes (1990) in a study of the Iliad and the Odyssey analysed the nature of the voices of the gods and suggested that in the ancient world, voice hearing was a normal way that people made important decisions. Voice hearers have found his book helpful.
