ABSTRACT

In order to support the theory of the interaction of communicative goals and syntactic form presented in Chapter 3 and to be able to implement it as part of a NLG system, additional support beyond native speaker intuitions on the appropriateness of particular forms in particular contexts is needed. Ideally, one would take a corpus annotated with communicative goals and measure the correlations of each goal with the non-canonical forms of interest here. Then, this statistical model of goal-form pairings could be used in a generation system as a way to select the best form to use given the communicative goal to be achieved.
