ABSTRACT

In this regard, there are some very large questions that teachers need to ask themselves:

1) Why was the decision made to introduce compulsory formal education in the first place? What thinking went into the particular style and content of that education, and how, if at all, has that thinking changed over the years? To what extent are the ‘official’ purposes of education as revealed in government policy the same as teachers’ ‘unofficial’ purposes (i.e. their own personal views as to what education should be for and about)?
