ABSTRACT

Whether or not one subscribes to the Foucauldian premise that modern institutions such as medicine and the law do not simply “prohibit” but also “produce” the homosexual as the necessary if evil twin of a normative heterosexuality, it is still evident that people who engage in homoerotic activity are often the object of (a sometimes murderous) reprobation. What is less certain is how to remedy this situation and to what particular end. For some gays and lesbians, an answer is to be found in what since the 1970s has been termed “identity politics.”
