ABSTRACT
This chapter will assess trends in community-higher education institution (HEI) partnerships. While such partnerships are appearing globally, the main focus of this assessment will be on future partnerships in the United States. Before discussing the future, it is useful to note that the idea of community-HEI partnerships is not new. Bender and others provide descriptions of community-HEI partnerships from the Middle Ages to the present (Bender, 1988; Cisneros, 1996; Cox, 2000). The purpose of this chapter will be to provide a brief description of the current status of partnerships and offer an assessment of about their future from two perspectives, a view from HEIs and a view from community.
