ABSTRACT

Microbiology Vibrio species are helical Gram-negative and oxidase-positive bacteria. Vibrios grow best in alkaline media and some species are halophilic, i.e. salt-tolerant. Vibrio cholerae is the main pathogenic species, responsible for ‘cholera pandemics’. Rare vibrios include Vibreo parahaemolyticus (causes gastroenteritis) and Vibrio vulnificus (causes severe, often fatal, necrotizing cellulitis and septicemia).
